Hours calculator
An hours calculator finds the time between a start and finish, then subtracts any unpaid breaks. For example, 9am to 5pm with a 30-minute unpaid break is 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours. Use the next-day option for an overnight shift and check the assumptions beside your result.

How to calculate hours worked
Subtracting breaks
Hours worked = finish − start − unpaid break. Only deduct time you are not paid for; a paid break stays inside the hours. 9am to 5pm is eight hours elapsed, and a 30-minute unpaid lunch makes it 7 hours 30 minutes worked.
Converting minutes
Divide minutes by 60 to get decimal hours: 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50, not 7.30. The calculator keeps the underlying minutes and only rounds the decimal it displays.
Night shifts
Overnight shifts
If the finish time is earlier than the start, the calculator does not silently assume you worked through the night. It asks you to tick "Ends next day", and then 22:00 to 06:00 is eight hours before breaks. Your inputs stay in place while you tick it.
The comparison is between clock labels only. If your shift crosses a daylight-saving change, the elapsed time can differ from the clock difference by an hour; use a dated duration calculator with explicit offsets for that case.
Work time calculator
Worked, paid and billable hours
Worked hours are the time on the clock after unpaid breaks. Paid hours depend on your contract, and billable hours depend on what the client agreed to pay for. Being present for eight hours does not automatically mean eight paid or eight billable hours.
The optional split takes non-billable minutes out of the billable figure only; hours worked do not change. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes worked with 90 non-billable minutes is 6 hours billable and still 7 hours 30 minutes worked.
This one-shift tool cannot tell you whether a week complies with working-time rules. The UK's 48-hour limit, for instance, is an average normally taken over 17 weeks with opt-outs and exceptions (seeGOV.UK).

Frequently asked questions
Hours worked questions
How many hours is 9am to 5pm with lunch?
The elapsed time is eight hours. With a 30-minute unpaid break, the result is seven hours and thirty minutes; paid-break arrangements may differ.
How do I calculate overnight hours?
Enter the start and end, then select "Ends next day". For example, 10pm to 6am the next day is eight hours before unpaid breaks.
Are minutes decimal fractions of an hour?
Yes, but divide minutes by 60. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, not 0.30 hours.
Are work hours always billable?
No. Billable time depends on what you have agreed with the client. The optional billable allocation does not change the amount of time worked.
Can I add a full week's hours?
Use the linked time-card calculator for daily rows, weekly totals and CSV export. This tool is designed for one shift.
Does the calculator account for daylight saving?
This simple shift tool compares clock times without a timezone adjustment. Use the dated duration calculator's elapsed-time mode when an offset change matters.
Does it round my time?
The default is no time rounding. Decimal display precision does not change the underlying minutes used in the calculation.
